Foreign licence: what happens after one year of residence in Italy?

A non-EU/EEA licence is usable for one year after Italian residence begins, with the required companion document; then check conversion eligibility.

For a licence issued outside the EU or EEA, the Italian residence rule allows driving for one year after acquiring residence, provided the licence remains valid and has an international permit or official Italian translation. After that period, check whether the issuing country has a conversion agreement with Italy; otherwise an Italian examination may be needed.

The one-year period is tied to residence

Article 135 of the Highway Code applies to non-EU/EEA licences. A person who acquires residence in Italy may drive with the foreign licence for up to one year, while it is valid and accompanied by an international permit or official Italian translation. Keep proof of the relevant residence date and do not count from a holiday or short visit as if it were residence.

If the document itself expires sooner, the residence period does not make an expired licence usable. Likewise, an international permit or translation cannot extend the underlying licence. Check both validity dates, the exact category and any restrictions before driving during the allowed period.

After the period, verify conversion or examination

Once the one-year period has passed, do not continue driving on the assumption that a pending application or a translation restores the right to drive. MIT's current conversion list determines whether the issuing country has a reciprocal agreement and which terms apply. Agreements can change, and their individual clauses may set conditions, deadlines or categories.

If conversion is not available, consult the Italian licensing authority about the examination route and the documents required. Avoid applying an old four- or six-year summary to every country; check the current MIT page and its effective dates. Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving while my conversion request is pending after one year?

Do not assume so. Ask the competent Italian authority what applies to your case and follow its written instructions.

What if Italy has no conversion agreement with my country?

The conversion route may be unavailable; check with the authority whether an Italian examination is required.
