Foreign driving licences and car hire: which documents to check
Before booking a car, check that your driving licence is valid in the country, accepted by the hire company, and accompanied by any required supporting document.
If you hold a foreign driving licence, before hiring a car check its validity and category, whether it is recognised in the country, whether you need an International Driving Permit or translation, and the contract requirements. If you have moved to Italy and become resident there, different rules may apply than for a visitor.
First check that you are entitled to drive
Check which country issued the licence, its expiry date and the category shown. In Italy, EU/EEA licences are subject to recognition and validity rules; with a licence from outside the EU/EEA, you may also need an International Driving Permit or official translation. The MIT also distinguishes between a temporary visit and taking up residence in Italy.
If you live in Italy, note when you became resident. The MIT sets a time limit for driving with a non-EU licence and requires conversion where applicable; bilateral agreements determine whether conversion is possible. Do not rely on the hire company handing you the keys as proof that an expired licence or unsuitable category is acceptable.
Read the hire company’s terms
Check the contract before paying, including age requirements, how long you must have held your licence, payment card rules, additional drivers and permitted territories. The company may ask for a translation or International Driving Permit even where public rules allow you to drive with your national licence; the contract does not replace the country’s laws.
Ask for written confirmation and state the issuing country and the language of your document. If collecting the car abroad, also check the rules at the border and for any ferries or transit countries. An International Driving Permit must be carried with the original licence; it does not remedy an expiry, suspension or insufficient category.
Prepare your documents for collection
Bring the original licence, an identity document or passport, an International Driving Permit if required, your booking details and a payment card accepted by the hire company. Check that the name on the contract matches your documents. Have any damage recorded before setting off and keep the assistance contact details.
If the hire company refuses your licence at the desk, do not try to get around the check with a photo or informal translation. Contact customer services and ask which requirement is missing; if the issue is legal validity, check with the relevant authority. For a licence conversion in Italy, contact the UMC before booking journeys that require a professional category.
To revise Italian road rules, Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers topic-based study, exam quizzes and a review of your mistakes.
Frequently asked questions
Does a hire contract make an unrecognised driving licence valid?
No. The contract sets commercial terms and does not replace the country’s traffic rules. Check both before booking.
Is a non-EU licence enough if I have been resident in Italy for more than a year?
The MIT says that the driving time limit and whether conversion is possible depend on the country and applicable agreements. Check the current MIT page and ask the UMC before driving.
