Foreign driving licences
Can an expired foreign licence be exchanged in Italy?
It depends on the issuing country and agreement; check current MIT conditions before assuming an expired licence can be exchanged.
There is no universal answer for an expired foreign licence. Exchange eligibility and any expiry allowance depend on the issuing country, the applicable agreement and MIT instructions. An expired licence does not authorise driving; contact the competent Motorizzazione office before applying or driving.
An expired licence is not valid for driving
If the foreign licence has expired, do not drive in Italy on the assumption that a pending exchange or an international permit extends it. A translation or international permit also cannot renew the underlying licence. Article 135 and the applicable Italian rules govern use of foreign documents, while conversion is a separate administrative procedure.
Whether an expired document can be exchanged depends on the type of licence and the country that issued it. Some agreements and instructions may set specific limits or require a certificate from the issuing authority. The MIT conversion page is country-specific; do not transfer an allowance from another country's agreement or rely on an unofficial summary.
Ask the licensing office before you submit
Check the latest MIT instructions for the issuing country, including whether the licence must be valid on the application date, what proof of validity or authenticity is needed, and whether a deadline applies. If the published material does not resolve your case, ask the competent Motorizzazione office and retain the written reply.
Bring the licence, a compliant Italian translation where required, identity and residence documents, and any certificates requested by the authority. Do not continue driving while the issue is unresolved. Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you review Italian categories and theory through quizzes; it does not renew or exchange a foreign licence.
