Foreign driving licences
How long can I drive in Italy with a non-EU licence?
A visitor may drive with a valid non-EU licence and an international permit or official Italian translation; residence changes the time limit.
A visitor may drive in Italy with a valid licence issued outside the EU or EEA when accompanied by an international permit or an official Italian translation. The one-year rule applies to a person who acquires residence in Italy, not simply to every tourist's stay. Confirm the document and status rules for your case.
Visitors need a valid licence and the required companion document
Article 135 of the Italian Highway Code covers licences issued outside the EU and EEA. For driving in Italy, the foreign licence must be valid and accompanied by an international driving permit or an official translation into Italian. The permit is used with the original licence; a translation must meet the official requirements. Carry the documents together when driving.
The applicable convention, language and translation route depend on the licence and issuing country. A visitor should not assume that a rental booking, an informal translation or a photograph of the licence satisfies the legal document requirement. Check the current MIT guidance and the Italian authority's instructions before driving, especially if the licence has conditions or the document is close to expiry.
Residence starts a separate one-year period
The one-year limit is tied to acquiring residence in Italy. A person who becomes resident can use the foreign licence only during the period set by the Highway Code, subject to the validity and accompanying-document requirements. That limit is not a general allowance for all visitors, and a tourist's permitted stay should not be confused with the residence rule.
Before the period expires, check whether Italy has a reciprocal conversion agreement with the issuing country and which documents the MIT requires. If conversion is unavailable, the applicable procedure may require an Italian examination.
