Where may you practise driving with an Italian learner permit?
The learner permit allows practice under Article 122; for category B, check mandatory lessons and which regime applies to your permit.
An Italian learner permit (“foglio rosa”) allows practice for the requested category, but not solo driving: Article 122, the accompanying-driver rules and vehicle conditions still apply. For a regular category B licence, Decree No. 294/2025 sets eight hours, but its provisions take effect only when the subsequent director’s decree on the certification platform enters into force; earlier permits follow transitional rules. Check which regime applies to your authorisation.
A learner permit is an authorisation with conditions
After passing the theory exam, the learner permit allows practice for the category requested. For category B, road practice takes place with an instructor or a person who meets Article 122 requirements; you may not drive alone. The accompanying person must be able to intervene and must hold a valid licence for the required category for at least ten years, or a higher-category licence. The age and other conditions in the statute also apply.
MIT Decree No. 294/2025 sets eight hours of practice for a regular category B licence, but Article 6 makes its provisions effective only from the date when the subsequent director’s decree on the certification platform enters into force. Earlier permits remain under transitional rules. Before starting private practice, ask your driving school or Motor Vehicle Office which route and certificate apply to your permit.
Use the right vehicle and follow restrictions
The practice vehicle must match the relevant category and show the required learner sign. For category B, display the “P” sign as required by the Highway Code; the car must meet the technical requirements and the accompanying person must sit beside the candidate. Conditions differ for motorcycles, mopeds and other categories, so do not apply car rules automatically to a motorcycle.
The learner permit does not allow you to ignore signs or restrictions. Follow the rules for the category and vehicle. If the permit includes personal restrictions, the car must be compatible. For private practice with category B, the 2025 decree provides for a final certificate that enables practice with an accompanying driver under Article 122(2). If you are unsure about a transitional or recording issue, ask the office that issued your authorisation.
