Are an international permit and an official translation the same?
No. Italian law refers to an international permit or an official Italian translation for certain foreign licences; they are different documents.
No. An international driving permit is a convention-format companion to the national licence; an official translation renders the licence into another language. For a non-EU or non-EEA licence used in Italy, the Highway Code refers to an international permit or an official Italian translation. Check the exact rule that applies to your licence and status.
Different documents serve different purposes
An international driving permit is issued in a format tied to an international road-traffic convention and is used together with the original licence. A translation reproduces the information on that licence in a language required by the authority. They are not synonyms, and a translation should not be assumed to be accepted wherever an international permit is required.
Article 135 of the Italian Highway Code sets conditions for driving in Italy with licences issued outside the EU or EEA, including the requirement for an international permit or an official Italian translation. The applicable route depends on the document and circumstances. Check the current MIT instructions and the authority handling your case before relying on a translation or applying for a permit.
Check what makes a translation official
MIT describes several routes for a certified translation: a translation certified by the foreign diplomatic or consular representation in Italy, with the specified signature legalisation; an Italian diplomatic or consular representation abroad; or an official translator or sworn translation completed through the stated Italian procedure. Not every informal translation or agency document qualifies.
Keep the original licence with the required permit or translation, and verify whether the authority needs a full translation, certification or legalisation in your particular case. Rules for residents and visitors can differ. For revision of Italian licence categories and traffic theory, Quiz Patente Ufficiale provides study chapters and quizzes, not document certification or legal advice.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale supports study of Italian theory and licence categories through chapters and quizzes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a sworn translation instead of an international permit?
For some situations the Italian rule allows an official translation, but the exact requirement depends on the licence and case. Check MIT instructions.
Does an international permit replace my foreign licence?
No. It accompanies the original national licence and does not replace it.
