How long is an international driving permit valid?

The Geneva model is valid for one year and the Vienna model for three; neither can outlast the Italian licence.

The international permit's maximum validity depends on the convention model: one year for the 1949 Geneva model and three years for the 1968 Vienna model. In either case, it cannot remain valid beyond the Italian national licence. The destination may require a particular model, so check that rule before applying.

Validity depends on the convention model

The Italian Motorist Portal states that the permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention is valid for one year, while the 1968 Vienna Convention model is valid for three years. These are maximum periods linked to the models, not a guarantee that every destination accepts either document for the whole period. A country may require the other model or may not require an international permit at all.

Check the destination's current official instructions before submitting an application. If your route crosses other countries, check those rules too. Do not rely only on a travel blog or on a permit issued for an earlier trip: treaty status, local requirements and your personal document dates all matter.

The Italian licence remains the limit

The permit cannot be valid longer than the national driving licence on which it is based. If your Italian licence expires first, the international document does not extend your authority to drive. Check both expiry dates against the entire trip and renew the national licence through the applicable Italian procedure where necessary.

The permit also does not add categories or remove restrictions from the Italian licence. Carry both originals, and verify whether the rental company has separate document rules. Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you study Italian categories and theory rules through quizzes; it does not calculate the validity or acceptance of travel documents for a specific country.
