Can you drive anywhere abroad with an Italian driving licence?

Italian licences are recognised under different rules in EU and non-EU countries. Check permit, translation and rental requirements.

Do not assume that an Italian driving licence is sufficient in every country. The EU card is generally recognised within the EU; outside the Union, you may need an international permit or an official translation. Check your destination and any transit countries before setting off.

Travelling to EU countries

For a trip to another EU country, start with a valid Italian licence and check that its category covers the vehicle. Carry the physical card and make sure it will not expire during your stay. If your licence was renewed recently or you have a temporary receipt, check with the authorities before driving.

Recognition of your document does not mean that every rule is the same as in Italy. Age limits, equipment, insurance, speed limits and car-hire requirements can vary. Check the destination country’s official guidance and the car-hire contract: commercial terms may be more restrictive.

Travelling outside the EU

MIT says that in many non-EU countries you will generally need an international driving permit or a sworn translation of your licence into the required language. The two international formats refer to different conventions; choose the one specified by your destination and account for any countries you will cross by car.

Apply for the permit through the Motorizzazione; it must always accompany your valid Italian licence. Also check whether your destination requires a minimum period of validity remaining on your licence, a translation or other car-hire documents. A travel agency’s information may be useful, but check documentary requirements with the consulate or local authority.

Prepare your travel documents

Before departure, keep your licence, international permit where required, vehicle documents and insurance cover together. If you are driving a hire car, note the assistance number and check who is authorised to drive, the rules for crossing borders and any fees or restrictions in the contract.

Do not rely on a screenshot of the Italian digital licence for travel abroad: IO’s official information describes use of the credential during in-person checks in Italy. To cross the border, carry the physical card and the documents required by your destination. Check the requirements again close to your travel date, as rules can change.

Frequently asked questions

Is the digital licence in IO valid outside Italy?

IO’s published guidance for Documents on IO describes use of the digital licence during in-person checks in Italy. For travel abroad, carry your physical licence and check which documents the country requires.

Is an international permit compulsory in every non-EU country?

No. Whether you need one, and which format is accepted, depends on the country and applicable conventions; some destinations may require an official translation. Check with local authorities in advance.
