I lost my Italian driving licence abroad: what should I do?
Report the loss to local authorities and ask the Italian consular office for guidance; a report alone does not authorise you to keep driving.
If you lose your Italian licence during a trip, report it promptly to the local authorities and contact the competent Italian consular office for guidance on your situation. A report documents the loss but does not automatically replace a valid licence in the country you are visiting. Do not continue driving based only on the report or a photo of the card.
Record the loss in the country where you are
ACI’s general information on documents for driving abroad and the Italian Foreign Ministry’s consular services point travellers towards the relevant authorities and offices in the country. Report the loss under local procedures and keep an official copy or receipt. Then tell the competent Italian consulate and ask which steps apply in your case.
The procedure may depend on the country, length of stay and the document you need. Do not assume that a consulate can immediately issue a replacement licence or temporary permission to drive: use only instructions from the competent authority and ask exactly which documents are recognised locally.
A report is not the same as a driving licence
A report proves that you notified authorities of the loss, but it does not itself grant licence categories or guarantee that local police or a rental company will accept a digital copy. Until you have official confirmation of a valid replacement document, do not drive if local rules require the original or a specific certificate.
For example, a phone photo may help you recover licence details, but it is not automatically a recognised licence. Contact the consulate or follow its guidance on obtaining a replacement from the Italian Motorizzazione. If you are using a rental car, tell the rental company and check the contract and local rules separately.

Frequently asked questions
Does a loss report let me keep driving abroad?
Not automatically. Check with local authorities and the Italian consular office whether a replacement document is recognised.
Does the consulate always issue a temporary licence?
Do not assume so. Ask the competent office which documents and procedures apply in that country.
