Moving to Italy with an EU licence: when must I convert it?
A valid EU/EEA licence generally remains usable until expiry; special rules apply to licences with no expiry or longer validity.
A valid licence issued by an EU or EEA country is generally recognised in Italy. Under current MIT guidance, ordinary licences remain usable until expiry; a licence with no expiry date or a validity longer than the EU framework must be converted after two years of residence in Italy. Check the exact document and current procedure.
Ordinary EU and EEA licences
EU rules support mutual recognition of valid driving licences. If you move to Italy with an ordinary EU or EEA licence that has an expiry date consistent with the common framework, MIT guidance says it can be used until it expires. Conversion is then handled according to the rules applying to the document and its issuing country.
Do not infer the deadline from the date you first visited Italy. The relevant period concerns residence, and the special case of a licence with no expiry date or an unusually long validity is different. Check your residence date, the printed expiry date and the current MIT conversion instructions before submitting an application.
Two-year rule for special validity periods
MIT's guidance provides a two-year period from establishing residence in Italy for an EU/EEA licence without an expiry date or with a validity longer than the EU framework. The conversion procedure allows the Italian authority to align the record and validity with applicable rules. Do not treat this as a rule that every EU licence must be converted within two years.
Check the MIT page for the required application, documents and office, and ask the authority if the licence contains codes, restrictions or medical conditions. Keep the original valid document while the case is handled and follow any written instructions. Quiz Patente Ufficiale can support study of Italian categories and theory rules with chapters and quizzes; it does not process licence conversion.
