Tyres
Tyres worn on one side: what could it mean?
Wear along one edge may be caused by tyre pressure, wheel alignment or components. Have the car checked before the damage worsens.
If the tread is more worn on one side, do not ignore it: possible causes include incorrect pressure, wheel alignment or geometry, and worn suspension components. Check the pressure against the handbook and have the tyre and vehicle inspected by a tyre specialist or mechanic.
Inspect the tread without trying to diagnose it
Look across the full width of the tread: inner edge, centre and outer edge. A more worn edge is a clue, not a diagnosis. Incorrect pressure, wheel alignment, worn components or an impact with a pothole can contribute to uneven wear, but technical measurements are needed to find the cause.
Also look for cuts, bulges, vibration, unusual noise or the car pulling to one side. If you notice structural damage or the tyre is losing air, do not continue driving; seek assistance. Do not swap the wheels to hide the wear before checking that they are compatible and the underlying problem has been fixed.
Check the pressure first
Measure all tyres when cold and compare the readings with the manufacturer’s recommendations for your vehicle configuration and load. Do not inflate beyond the specified values to compensate for one worn edge: an arbitrary adjustment will not correct alignment or suspension problems and may reduce grip.
If a tyre repeatedly loses pressure, simply topping it up is not enough. A tyre specialist can inspect the valve, wheel rim and tread, while a garage can check alignment and components. Ask them to explain the cause and measure the result after any adjustment.
Consider replacement and safety
If the tread is below the legal limit, the tyre structure is damaged or the wear compromises grip, replace the tyre on technical advice. Even above the minimum limit, severe uneven wear can reduce wet-weather performance and require prompt attention.
When fitting new tyres, check the sizes, ratings and specifications approved for the vehicle. If two tyres need replacing, ask the professional how to match them correctly for the axle and the car’s characteristics. Note the inspection date and check wear again after the work: if it returns, further diagnosis is needed.

Frequently asked questions
Is incorrect pressure always the reason one side is worn?
No. Pressure is one possible cause, but wear, alignment, suspension problems or impacts may also contribute. A professional should inspect the vehicle to diagnose it.
Can I keep driving if the edge is worn?
It depends on the depth of wear and any damage. If the tyre is damaged or badly worn, stop somewhere safe and arrange an inspection; do not continue using a tyre you are unsure about.
