Quiz patente: come distinguere AM, A1 e B1

Compare minimum age, vehicle type and technical limits to distinguish Italian AM, A1 and B1 licence categories.

AM, A1 and B1 cover different vehicles. In brief, AM covers mopeds and light quadricycles; A1 covers motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW, plus qualifying tricycles; B1 covers non-light quadricycles up to 15 kW. Check the age and technical limits for the specific category.

Three categories, three vehicle groups

The AM licence can be obtained from age 14 and covers two- or three-wheel mopeds and light quadricycles, subject to their respective speed, engine-size or power limits. A1 is available from age 16 and covers motorcycles with a maximum capacity of 125 cc, power up to 11 kW and a power-to-weight ratio within the statutory limit; it also covers tricycles within their specific limit.

Category B1 is available from age 16 for non-light quadricycles, with maximum power of 15 kW and different weight limits depending on use. Do not confuse it with category B: the vehicle’s technical classification, not its appearance, determines which licence is required. Details can differ between homologated subtypes; for an individual decision, check the registration certificate and the Ministry page for the category.

How to read category questions

When a question gives an engine size or power figure, first identify the vehicle and the licence category involved. Distinguish a motorcycle from a moped, and a light quadricycle from a non-light one; then check the category’s age and thresholds. One number is not enough: AM depends on vehicle type and its limits, A1 on capacity, power and ratio, and B1 on quadricycle classification.

For study, make a table with category, minimum age and permitted vehicles, then answer questions without mixing columns. If a question gives a figure near a threshold, return to the Ministry source rather than relying on an approximation. Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you practise category questions and review mistakes; consult the dedicated Ministry pages for current requirements.
