Parking
Quiz patente: differenza tra arresto, fermata e sosta
Article 157 distinguishes a traffic stop, a brief stop and parking; identify the situation described in the question.
Arresto, fermata and sosta are not synonyms. Arresto interrupts movement because of traffic; fermata is temporary, with the driver present and ready to move; sosta is a longer suspension. To choose the answer, consider the cause, duration and driver’s presence under Article 157.
Three different situations
Article 157 defines arresto as a momentary interruption of movement caused by traffic needs, for example at a red light or in a queue. It is not a decision to park: traffic requires the vehicle to stop. Fermata is a temporary interruption, including to let someone get on or off, with the driver present and ready to move again, provided traffic is not obstructed.
Sosta is a longer suspension of movement during which the driver may leave the vehicle. The distinction is not based only on elapsed minutes: the nature of the action and its connection to traffic matter. For example, waiting at a red light is arresto; briefly pulling over to let a passenger out can be fermata; leaving the vehicle and walking away is sosta, provided no restriction applies.
Clues to look for in a quiz
Read whether the vehicle is stopped for a traffic light, a brief need or because it has been left parked. Note whether the driver stays present or ready to move, whether the vehicle obstructs traffic and whether a restriction sign is present. Match the facts to the definition instead of treating “stationary” as automatically meaning parked.
The definition is only the first step: Article 157 also contains rules on the position and manner of stopping, brief stops and parking. If a question concerns a restriction, read the signs and applicable exceptions too.
