Roadworthiness test and service: know the difference

A roadworthiness test is a periodic legal inspection; a service is scheduled maintenance carried out in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Having your car serviced does not renew its roadworthiness test, and passing the test does not replace maintenance. Keep the dates and records separate.

What is a roadworthiness test?

A periodic roadworthiness test checks that the vehicle meets prescribed requirements, including safety conditions and noise and emissions limits. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport explains the test schedule and results. The result is recorded under the relevant procedure; check the date rather than relying only on stickers or your memory of an earlier test.

A roadworthiness test is not a full service. It has a defined scope and does not guarantee that the vehicle will remain in good working order until the next due date. If you notice noises, warning lights or leaks after passing the test, have the vehicle checked anyway.

What is a service?

A service follows the manufacturer’s schedule, with intervals and tasks that vary by model and how the vehicle is used. It may include scheduled checks or replacements and does not have one nationwide due date. Consult the handbook, record the date and mileage, and keep invoices and details of the work.

The roadworthiness test and service may fall at different times. A garage may remind you of a due date, but check it against the vehicle documents and official services. A service does not extend the legal test deadline; passing the test does not replace the work needed to maintain the vehicle to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Keep two separate schedules

Add the test date to a calendar and set a reminder well in advance; consult the MIT procedure or the Portale dell’Automobilista. For maintenance, follow the manufacturer’s schedule and take account of any dashboard reminders. If you buy a used vehicle, check both its testing and service history against the available documents and records.

A roadworthiness test is a mandatory periodic inspection: for a private car, the first is due within four years of first registration, then every two years. A service is maintenance scheduled by the manufacturer and may be needed more often. Servicing does not renew the test, and vice versa.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you study road theory and obligations by chapter, take timed practice tests and review mistakes; it does not manage your vehicle’s due dates.

Frequently asked questions

If I have my car serviced, can I postpone the roadworthiness test?

No. A service does not change the due dates set for the periodic roadworthiness test.

Does a current roadworthiness test mean the car has just been serviced?

No. They are different checks; consult the maintenance schedule and the garage’s records.
