Failed roadworthiness test: can you drive the car to a garage?

After a failed test, do not assume you can drive. Check the wording and ask the Motorizzazione or test centre how to move the vehicle.

“Retest” and other notes can have different effects. The test document and official guidance determine what you may do; simply needing to get to a garage does not.

Identify the exact result

People often use “failed” informally, but the report may show a specific result such as “retest” or a suspension. The MIT says that a “retest” result requires repairs and another test within one month; if a suspension is recorded, the vehicle remains suspended from circulation until it passes a new test. Read the document and do not rely on a verbal summary given at the counter.

Check which defects were found and whether the report contains restrictions or instructions on driving. If anything is unclear, ask the testing centre or Motorizzazione for written clarification. Do not decide to drive based on generic advice found online: the recorded result and your particular circumstances determine what is allowed.

Arrange a compliant repair

Once you have clarified the vehicle’s legal status, contact a garage and explain the result. If driving is not allowed, arrange recovery by tow truck or another permitted method; do not drive “just a few kilometres” without official confirmation. Follow the procedure for presenting the vehicle for another test and keep receipts, the report and proof of the new booking.

Do not remove faults or disable equipment to pass the test. Repairs must restore the required condition; if a component affects safety, do not use the car until a technician considers it fit and the formalities have been completed.

Check that the vehicle can return to the road

After the new test, check the recorded result and any notes on the vehicle documents. Keep the pass report and ask how to check the updated status. A booking is not the same as passing the test and does not lift a suspension already recorded.

Check the exact wording on the report: “retest” means defects must be repaired and the vehicle presented again under the stated conditions; “suspended from circulation” means you must not use the vehicle, except for any journey permitted for repairs or testing. If the report is unclear, ask the centre before moving the car.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapter-by-chapter study, timed practice tests and a review of your mistakes; it cannot determine whether a vehicle that has failed its test may be driven.
