Can I tow a 750 kg trailer with an Italian category B licence?

Yes, if 750 kg is the trailer’s maximum authorised mass and the car is approved for that towing setup.

An Italian category B licence allows a trailer with a maximum authorised mass no greater than 750 kg. That does not authorise every combination: the car and combination must stay within their registered towing limits. The load must also be arranged and secured so it cannot fall, spill or affect stability.

750 kg is an authorised figure, not an estimate

Read the trailer's maximum authorised mass on its registration document. Do not confuse it with kerb weight or the load carried today: for the category B threshold, the relevant figure is the trailer's maximum authorised mass, up to and including 750 kg. Also check the car's maximum authorised mass and any maximum combination mass shown in its documents.

Then confirm that the specific car is approved to tow the trailer and that the trailer does not exceed its permitted towing mass. The approved limits may be lower than what the engine power seems to suggest. For example, a 750 kg trailer can fit the category B rule, but if the car is approved to tow less, the lower vehicle limit still applies.

Secure the load and check the combination

A licence does not certify a coupling or load. Check that the tow bar is installed and approved, electrical connections and lights work, and the load is distributed and secured. Article 164 of the Italian Highway Code requires loads not to fall or spill, obstruct visibility, or compromise stability or handling; any overhang must also follow the rules.

Before leaving, reread the documents and the trailer's payload limits. If you cannot find the towing mass or the figures do not match, ask the manufacturer, an authorised workshop or the Motorizzazione. Do not infer that towing is legal just because the vehicle can physically move; it is permitted only within the approved limits.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 750 kg threshold include the load?

The licence threshold refers to the trailer's maximum authorised mass. Actual loading must still stay within that mass and all other limits.

Is B enough if the trailer is rated at 750 kg but the car may tow less?

No. The licence does not override the car's limits. Follow its registered towing mass and combination mass.
