Category B and a trailer: how to calculate the combination mass

Add the car and trailer maximum authorised masses to choose a licence, then check the car’s towing limits.

For an Italian category B licence, use the maximum authorised masses shown in the car and trailer documents. A trailer up to 750 kg falls within the B rule; if it is heavier, the combination may reach 4,250 kg, but above 3,500 kg you need code 96 and its specific test. Above that range, BE may be required, within the category limits.

Use authorised masses, not the load for this trip

The registration documents show each vehicle's maximum authorised mass. For the licence category, use those limits, not the current weight on a scale. Find the car's maximum authorised mass and the trailer's maximum authorised mass, then add them. For example, a car authorised at 2,200 kg and a trailer at 1,300 kg make an authorised combination of 3,500 kg.

Category B allows a trailer with a maximum authorised mass up to 750 kg. If the trailer is heavier, the combination may be driven with B up to 3,500 kg; above 3,500 kg and no more than 4,250 kg, harmonised code 96 is required after a specific test. Category BE covers combinations outside the B96 range, with a trailer whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 3,500 kg.

The licence does not change the car’s technical limits

After choosing the licence category, separately check that the car is approved to tow that trailer and combination. Its registration document sets the trailer mass and maximum combination mass; an extension to your licence does not increase them. Compare the car and trailer documents and their technical plates, including the actual configuration.

For a real combination, write down both authorised masses and the car's towing limit before connecting the trailer. If a document is unclear or the figures conflict, ask the Italian Motorizzazione or a qualified professional to interpret them. Do not decide from kerb weight, a marketing payload figure or a rough scale estimate.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian licence categories and towing rules; ask the Motorizzazione or a professional to check your vehicle documents and trailer setup.

Frequently asked questions

Does the licence calculation use the trailer’s current weight?

The category is based on the sum of the maximum authorised masses in the documents. Actual weight is also subject to loading and towing limits.

Can B96 tow any trailer as long as the total is under 4,250 kg?

No. The combination must fit the B96 range and the car must be approved to tow it. B96 does not override the vehicle’s technical limits.
