What documents do you need to renew your driving licence?

For renewal, prepare your driving licence, ID, a recent passport photo and the required receipts. The MIT lists a €26.20 PagoPA fee and €7.32 for delivery.

For renewal, bring your driving licence, valid ID, a recent passport photo and the medical assessment receipt. The standard fee is €26.20 via PagoPA; you pay €7.32 when the new licence card is delivered. The provider may request reports or additional checks if your circumstances require them.

Prepare the basic documents

For a standard renewal, the MIT says to bring your driving licence, a recent passport photo and the required receipts: for the medical assessment and the N004 PagoPA fee of €26.20 (€10.20 in fees plus €16 stamp duty). Also bring ID and your health card for identification. Before you leave, check that the photo meets the provider’s requirements.

The MIT requires a photo for the standard renewal procedure. If your assessment is handled by a Local Medical Commission or your category has specific requirements, ask whether you need extra copies, a particular format or additional certificates. Keep the receipts for the medical assessment and PagoPA payment.

Additional documents for a CML or specific categories

If your case goes through the Local Medical Commission, you may need the appointment notice, medical reports, specialist certificates or other health documents. Ask the CML handling your case directly: a list found online for another province or medical condition may be incomplete or out of date.

For professional categories or licences with restrictions, clarify when booking whether an authorised doctor or the Commission will carry out the assessment and whether you need additional certificates. Reports must be relevant and legible; do not stop treatment or change medication to try to influence the assessment. Only a healthcare professional can give clinical advice.

Check payments and delivery details

The renewed licence card is posted to the address provided in the application. Delivery costs €7.32, payable on delivery or when collecting the item from the post office. The service includes one delivery attempt; if you are out, follow the notice left by the postie. Check that the address, postcode, name on the doorbell and any alternative contact details are correct.

Carefully check the address where the licence will be sent and the phone number or email address associated with the application. The Portale explains document delivery and the postal arrangements; an incorrect address can complicate delivery. After the assessment, keep the receipt until the new licence card arrives and note its expiry date.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you keep your theory knowledge up to date with chapters, practice tests and a review of your mistakes; it does not replace the assessment or administrative process.
