Renewing your licence
Licence renewal after age 80: which checks are required?
After age 80, there is no single rule for everyone: category, expiry date and health conditions determine the assessment and validity period.
After age 80, AM, A, B and D licences are renewed every 2 years; C and CE licences are renewed every two years after age 65. A medical examination is still required, and the date printed on your licence is authoritative.
Start with the category shown on your licence
Age alone does not tell you which licence you can renew or when. Motorcycle and car categories and professional categories may have different validity rules; a medical restriction or health condition may also require a specific assessment. Check your licence and the relevant category before booking.
MIT describes renewal as confirmation of physical and mental fitness and refers to the rules in the Italian Highway Code. Ask the authorised doctor which checks they carry out and whether your case requires the Local Medical Commission (CML). If the centre suggests additional tests, ask which clinical documents to bring and how to receive the official appointment notice.
Preparing for the appointment
Bring your driving licence, identity document and health card; include only certificates you have been asked to provide. If you take medication or your health has changed, prepare an up-to-date list of medicines and reports and share it with the professional. Do not stop medication or change your treatment without medical advice.
If your assessment is handled by the CML, follow its appointment notice and instructions: it may ask for documents or specialist examinations relevant to your case. A successful assessment may result in restrictions or a shorter validity period than expected. Follow the renewed licence and any codes shown on it when driving.
Check validity and travel plans
Do not wait until the final week to ask: contact the centre in advance, especially if the CML is involved. The date on your licence remains decisive; a booking does not authorise you to drive after expiry. The temporary permit mentioned by MIT applies to specific renewals through the CML and must be requested and issued.
After a successful assessment, keep the receipt and check delivery of your new card. The receipt allows you to drive in Italy until the card arrives, but is not valid abroad. If the restrictions or validity period are unclear, ask the doctor or the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office before using the relevant category.

Frequently asked questions
Does everyone need to go to the Local Medical Commission at age 80?
You cannot determine that from age alone. Whether the CML is needed depends on the category and applicable health conditions or restrictions. Ask the authorised doctor or relevant office to check your case.
How often is a category B licence renewed after age 80?
Every 2 years. Category D licences are also renewed every 2 years after age 80; C and CE become biennial after age 65. A medical restriction may set an earlier expiry date: follow the date on your licence.
