Renewing your licence
Can you renew your driving licence before it expires?
You can arrange the appointment in advance, but the correct date, start of validity and procedure depend on your licence and category.
You can start arranging your renewal in good time, but do not bring the examination forward without checking: the start date and duration depend on your category and the date already printed. Ask your chosen centre when to book.
Booking early does not change the expiry date
You can ask for information and book in advance so you do not leave it until the last minute. This is especially useful if you need to go through the Local Medical Commission or appointments are limited. However, having an appointment does not change the expiry date or extend your licence validity.
Before booking the examination, tell the doctor or CML your category, expiry date and any restrictions. MIT explains how expiry may be aligned with your birthday and how the first renewal may be calculated differently from later renewals. The centre can check when your examination should take place based on your licence.
Check how the new validity period will be calculated
Do not assume that an examination booked far in advance will always add a full period to your current expiry date, or that it will always use up part of it. The calculation depends on your category and stage of renewal. Follow MIT rules and the date shown on your document, not examples from other drivers.
If renewal depends on a medical assessment, also ask which reports and timing are required. Do not bring forward or repeat clinical tests without advice from your doctor or the Commission. If an appointment is moved, ask in writing whether this changes your application so you have an answer for your case.
Plan for the period after the examination
After a positive result, the doctor sends confirmation and gives you the required receipt. MIT limits its validity to driving in Italy until you receive the new card. If you plan to travel abroad, do not rely on the receipt as an internationally valid replacement for your licence.
When your new licence arrives, compare its category, codes and expiry date with what you expected. If you spot an error or do not receive it, contact the service listed on the receipt or the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. Keep proof of payments and steps taken; delete or protect copies containing personal data when you no longer need them.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you keep revising with chapters, exam quizzes and review of mistakes while you arrange your appointment.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance can I have the examination?
MIT’s page explains validity rules but does not give one time window for every category and situation. Ask the doctor or CML handling your renewal which appointment date is appropriate for your expiry.
If I have the examination early, do I lose days of validity?
Do not calculate this on your own: MIT distinguishes the first renewal from later ones and explains how validity starts in relation to an aligned expiry date. Check the date that will apply in your case before booking.
