How do you recognise an Italian no-mopeds sign?
A prohibition sign with a moped symbol, or a panel naming mopeds, marks the restriction and its stated conditions.
An Italian no-mopeds restriction is shown by a circular prohibition sign displaying the moped symbol, or by a supplementary panel that names the vehicle category. Follow any conditions listed below it, including times, road sections, and stated exceptions.
Read the symbol and panel together
Italian prohibition signs communicate limits that drivers must follow. A sign showing a moped symbol applies to that vehicle category; a supplementary panel can clarify the restriction or identify additional conditions. Do not assume that a small engine, a licence category, or a route used by other two-wheelers creates an exemption.
The sign’s position matters. It may apply to the road beyond the sign, an entrance, or a particular direction. Look for panels showing the distance, times, vehicle categories, or authorised exceptions and check for further signs that mark the end of the restriction.
Distinguish a moped from other vehicles
A moped is a defined vehicle category, not simply any small motorcycle or scooter. The documents and type approval identify the vehicle. If the sign depicts a moped, do not infer that it applies identically to motorcycles, bicycles, or other categories; read the symbol and the precise wording.
A separate restriction can also arise from the road’s classification. Article 175 excludes mopeds from motorways and main extra-urban roads, even if no additional local sign is visible at a particular point. A posted restriction may add controls on other roads as well.
Choose a route that permits your vehicle
Before entering, check the sign, its panel, and the legal class of your vehicle. If the conditions are unclear, do not enter and look for an alternative route. A navigation app may not reflect a temporary restriction or the exact category shown on the vehicle’s documents.
A supplementary plate may indicate a schedule or exception. Apply it only when you meet the stated condition and verify whether it covers the entire route or a particular segment. When signs conflict or are hard to read, follow any direction from an authorised officer and proceed cautiously.

Frequently asked questions
Does a no-mopeds sign apply to every two-wheeled vehicle?
Not necessarily. Read the pictogram and wording to identify the category. A moped, motorcycle, and bicycle are not interchangeable legal classes.
Can a 50 cc moped use a motorway if there is no local no-entry sign?
No. Article 175 independently excludes mopeds from motorways and main extra-urban roads.
