What should you do at an Italian slippery-road warning sign?

The sign warns of possible loss of grip; slow down early, increase your distance, and steer and brake smoothly.

The slippery-road warning sign alerts you to a risk of losing grip on the section ahead. Reduce speed before reaching the hazard, leave more distance, and use the accelerator, brakes, and steering smoothly. The actual risk depends on the road surface and weather.

Understand the warning

A slippery-road sign warns of a section where traction may be reduced. Rain can make a surface slick, especially after a dry spell or where water, oil, leaves, mud, or debris collect. The sign alerts you to a hazard; it does not promise that the whole road is wet or equally dangerous.

Look ahead for changes in surface, standing water, shaded areas, bends, and traffic. Reduce speed before you reach the slippery section rather than braking sharply after entering it. Leave extra space so you have more time to react if another vehicle slows or loses grip.

Use controls gently

Article 141 requires drivers to adjust speed to the road, traffic, vehicle, and other conditions and to remain able to stop safely within the visible distance. Smooth steering, gradual braking, and gentle acceleration help avoid sudden weight shifts that can reduce control on a low-grip surface.

If the vehicle begins to slide, avoid abrupt steering or braking. Look where you want to go, ease off the accelerator, and make small corrections. The right response depends on the vehicle and situation; do not attempt a sudden manoeuvre that could take you into another lane or off the road.

Weather and road surface both matter

The warning may be relevant even when it is not raining at that moment. A road can be slippery because of frost, loose material, mud from nearby works, or a surface that remains damp in shade. Follow temporary signs and any instructions from road workers.

A sign does not replace the general duty to drive at a safe speed. Keep adjusting your speed and distance as conditions change, and stop only in a permitted safe place if the vehicle cannot continue under control.

Frequently asked questions

Should I brake hard when I see the slippery-road sign?

No. Slow down smoothly before the hazard and avoid abrupt control inputs, which can reduce grip further.

Does the sign mean the road is slippery only when it rains?

No. Water is one possible cause, but frost, mud, leaves, or other surface conditions can also reduce grip.
