At an Italian yellow light, must you always stop?
Stop before the line unless you are so close that stopping safely is no longer possible; yellow does not mean accelerate.
At a steady yellow light in Italy, stop before the stop line unless, when the light comes on, you are so close that you cannot stop with sufficient safety. In that case proceed carefully and clear the intersection. Yellow does not authorise you to accelerate through it.
The rule is to stop
Article 41 gives a steady yellow light the meaning of a warning to stop. Do not cross the stop line after it comes on. If there is no line, stop before the point where you can observe the signal without entering the pedestrian crossing or intersection.
The rule is not “go if you can make it” and it does not invite you to accelerate. Consider your distance and speed as you approach so that you can stop in normal, safe conditions. Watch traffic behind you, but do not use another driver’s following distance as a reason to speed through the junction.
The exception for a vehicle too close to stop safely
The Code provides a narrow exception: if, when yellow comes on, you are so close to the stop point that you cannot stop with sufficient safety, you may continue. In that case, clear the intersection promptly and carefully, watching for road users who have a green light.
For example, if a sudden stop would cause loss of control or a collision because you have already passed the point where you could brake safely, do not stop in the middle of the intersection. Whether you are too close depends on the actual distance, speed, and conditions; it is not a general permission for someone approaching too fast.
Do not block an intersection
Even with a green light, do not enter an intersection unless you are sure you can clear it before the signal turns red. This avoids blocking cross traffic and helps protect pedestrians and cyclists.
A flashing yellow light has a different meaning: proceed at moderate speed and with particular caution, respecting priority rules. Do not confuse a flashing light with the steady yellow signal that warns drivers to stop.

Frequently asked questions
Must I brake if the light turns yellow while I am close to it?
Stop unless you are so close that you cannot stop with sufficient safety. In that limited case, continue carefully and clear the intersection.
Does yellow give me time to accelerate through?
No. It warns you to stop. The exception is only for a driver who can no longer stop safely, not for someone accelerating to beat the light.
