Refuelling
How much petrol is left when the low-fuel light comes on?
There is no universal remaining amount or distance: reserve fuel depends on the model and conditions. Refuel as soon as you can.
When the low-fuel light comes on, there is no remaining fuel amount or distance that applies to every car. The margin depends on the model, sensor reading, route and driving style. Use the warning to find a safe petrol station as soon as possible; do not plan to run the tank to its limit.
Why the remaining range varies
The light comes on when the fuel level falls below a threshold set by the manufacturer, but tank capacity and shape vary between vehicles. Hills, bends, slope, acceleration and braking can affect the reading; fuel consumption also varies with load, speed, weather and traffic.
Your model’s handbook may explain the warning light or give an estimate of the remaining fuel, but the figure is no guarantee of how many miles you can travel. The range estimate on the dashboard may change during the journey and should not be treated as a precise countdown.
Find a petrol station without risky manoeuvres
As soon as the warning appears, find an open station along your route and check traffic conditions. Use the satnav only after setting the destination safely or while stopped in a suitable place. On a motorway, follow the signs and operator instructions; do not stop in a lane or reverse to reach an exit.
If the vehicle starts losing power or the engine stops, switch on the hazard lights and, if possible, reach a lay-by or protected area. Follow the breakdown procedure in the handbook and call for assistance. Do not leave the car in a dangerous position to walk to a petrol station.
Avoid routinely driving with an almost empty tank
Refuelling early reduces the risk of stopping somewhere without services and gives you more options if there is a diversion or traffic. Do not rely on the range estimate to attempt a longer journey, especially in the mountains, in winter or in a remote area.
If the light comes on often, consider changing your routine and planning a stop earlier. There is no benefit to using every last drop of fuel; follow the handbook and contact a garage if the fuel gauge seems faulty or behaves abnormally.

Frequently asked questions
How many miles can I drive on reserve?
There is no universal distance. It depends on the car, fuel remaining, consumption and route conditions. Refuel as soon as possible and treat the dashboard range only as an estimate.
Is it harmful to wait until the tank is completely empty?
Do not plan to run it down to zero: you could stop in a dangerous place or somewhere without assistance. Follow the handbook and refuel when the warning appears.
