Is it better to fill the tank every time or add a little at a time?

There is no refuelling interval that suits every car: follow the handbook, usable range and conditions for your journey.

How much fuel to add depends on how and where you drive. Stop at the pump’s first automatic cut-off, and avoid routinely driving with the tank nearly empty without good reason.

Choose according to your journey

Filling the tank can be convenient before a long journey or when you expect few fuel stations along the way. A smaller amount may be enough for everyday travel. The decision depends on the vehicle’s range, route, load and availability of stations, rather than any universal mechanical rule. Check the handbook for how the reserve works and which fuel to use.

You do not necessarily need to wait for the fuel warning light before entering a remote area or a stretch with services far apart. Plan a stop at a reliable station and allow for detours, traffic and weather. A low-fuel warning needs attention, but it should not be your regular target for deciding when to refuel.

Stop when the nozzle cuts off

When refuelling, stop when the nozzle cuts off automatically. Do not keep adding fuel until the tank is brim-full: the system may need room for vapour and expansion, and overfilling can cause spills or interfere with vehicle systems. Do not wedge the trigger open or leave the pump unattended.

If the nozzle keeps cutting off unusually early, do not force it or adjust it at an unsafe angle. Stop, alert the attendant and check that it is safe to continue. A repeated problem may be with the pump or the vehicle and should be investigated.

Keep to safe refuelling habits

Switch off the engine and follow the station’s rules. Check the price and fuel type before you start, then keep the receipt if you want to track spending or consumption. If you notice a fuel smell or a leak after refuelling, stop somewhere safe and seek assistance.

Stop at the nozzle’s first automatic cut-off: continuing to fill can cause fuel to spill and interfere with the vapour recovery system. Before a long journey, it is sensible to start with enough fuel; for everyday use, there is no need to keep the tank full at all times.

Frequently asked questions

Is it harmful always to stop at the cut-off?

The automatic cut-off is the point at which to stop dispensing; do not top up to fill the tank to the brim.

Should I fill the tank before every journey?

Consider the vehicle’s range, route and availability of fuel stations; the handbook explains the reserve for your model.
