ABS warning light on: what changes when braking?
With the ABS warning light on, the anti-lock braking system may not work: drive carefully and have the vehicle checked.
The service brakes may behave differently when ABS reports a fault. Follow the handbook and do not test the system with sudden braking.
Understand the warning light
ABS helps prevent the wheels from locking during braking, allowing the driver to maintain directional control in the conditions for which the system was designed. If the light stays on after the initial check, the system may be disabled or have limited functionality. The exact meaning and any other warning lights involved vary by model, so consult the handbook.
An ABS warning light by itself does not automatically mean that the service brakes have failed completely, but you cannot assume they are working normally. If a red brake warning light also appears, the pedal feels different or braking is abnormal, stop as soon as it is safe and call for assistance. Do not continue just because the vehicle can still slow down.
What to do until the vehicle is checked
If the handbook says you may drive to a garage, travel only as far as necessary, at a speed suited to the conditions and with a greater stopping distance. Avoid slippery surfaces, harsh braking and manoeuvres that test the system. Do not deliberately test it on the road or remove fuses or sensors to turn off the warning.
Book a diagnostic check and tell the garage when the light appeared, whether it comes and goes, and what other messages are showing. Different sensors or components may be responsible; the cause needs to be identified with suitable equipment. Do not rely on a reset if the warning returns or the system remains out of service.
Prevention and maintenance
Do not ignore intermittent warning lights, especially before a long journey or in difficult weather. Maintain the tyres and brakes as described in the handbook: ABS works with the grip available and does not reduce stopping distance in every situation.
With the ABS warning light on, conventional braking may still be available, but ABS may not intervene. Increase your following distance, avoid high speeds and have the vehicle checked as soon as possible. If the red brake warning light or a fault message also appears, stop safely and call for assistance.

Frequently asked questions
Do the brakes always stop working if ABS fails?
Not necessarily, but anti-lock braking may be unavailable; follow the handbook and have the fault diagnosed.
Can I test ABS by braking hard?
No. Do not improvise road tests; drive carefully and contact a garage.
