Car servicing: when is it due and what does it include?

Servicing follows the intervals and work specified by the manufacturer, which may depend on time, mileage and how the vehicle is used.

A service is scheduled maintenance and is separate from the statutory roadworthiness test. Check the plan for your model and keep the invoices.

Follow the maintenance schedule

To find out when your car is due for a service, check the owner’s handbook or the manufacturer’s official website for your model and engine. Intervals may be based on mileage, time, driving conditions or dashboard indicators. Do not use a universal deadline taken from another car: the engine, model year and how the vehicle is used can all affect the requirements.

The schedule lists the work due, which may include checks or replacement of fluids and components. Every service does not have an identical checklist: the garage should follow the vehicle specifications and report any faults it finds. Before work starts, ask for an estimate and clarify which tasks are scheduled and which may be needed for another reason.

Keep a record of the work

Keep invoices, dates, mileage and details of the products used. This information helps you track maintenance and see when the next check is due. If you buy a used car, ask for verifiable records and compare them with the manufacturer’s schedule; a reset warning light does not prove that the service was carried out.

If the car reports a fault or has a leak, makes unusual noises or behaves abnormally, do not wait for its scheduled service: ask for it to be checked. Periodic maintenance does not replace an inspection when a symptom appears. For vehicles with electrical systems or specific warranty terms, use a qualified service centre in accordance with the manufacturer’s conditions.

Do not confuse servicing with the roadworthiness test

A service is maintenance according to the manufacturer’s schedule; the roadworthiness test is a legal inspection with deadlines and procedures set by the Italian authorities. Passing the test does not prove that all scheduled maintenance has been carried out, and a service does not replace the compulsory inspection.

The service schedule may specify an interval in miles or months, whichever comes first; some cars display a reminder on the dashboard. Record the date and mileage of the last service and book the next one before it is due. Keep the invoice and a record of the work for future maintenance.
