Can a 50 cc moped use a ring road?
Mopeds cannot use motorways or main extra-urban roads; on other ring roads, check the signs and restrictions for that section.
A 50 cc moped cannot use a motorway or a main extra-urban road. A ring road may have a different classification, however: check the start signs and local restrictions before entering the section.
When access is prohibited
Article 175 excludes mopeds and other categories from motorways and main extra-urban roads. The restriction does not depend only on engine capacity: a moped is an approved vehicle category with a limited design speed, which is incompatible with access to these roads.
If the sign marks the beginning of a motorway or main extra-urban road, do not enter on a moped. An exception for some larger motorcycles does not make a 50 cc moped eligible; it applies to different vehicle categories and technical thresholds.
The word “ring road” is not enough
The Highway Code classifies roads by category and requires start and end signs for motorways and main extra-urban roads. “Tangenziale” is a local name: it can describe an urban ring road, an extra-urban road, or a route with sections of different types.
There is no yes-or-no answer that applies to every ring road. A moped may use a road outside the categories in Article 175 only if its signs, the vehicle’s approval category, and any rules for that section allow it. A sign prohibiting mopeds is binding even where the road is not a motorway.
Avoid entering the wrong road
As you approach, look for the road-category signs and panels that restrict access to certain vehicle classes. Do not use traffic speed, ramps, or the name in a navigation app as your only evidence of the road’s classification.
If the route changes category, follow the signs at each transition. If a sign is difficult to see, choose a permitted alternative and check the road owner’s information rather than attempting to enter a motorway ramp.

Frequently asked questions
Can a 50 cc moped use a road that looks like an urban ring road?
Only if the section is actually a road outside the motorway and main extra-urban categories and has no specific restriction. Check the signs and panels.
Does a no-moped sign also apply on an urban ring road?
Yes. The restriction applies to the vehicle category shown, regardless of the road’s local name.
