Restricted traffic zones and city driving
Motorhomes in ZTLs: planning your arrival and parking
In a motorhome, check ZTL rules, emissions restrictions, vehicle dimensions and weight; verify the route to an authorised site.
Finding a car park on a map is not enough: check that your vehicle is allowed, any permit is linked to its number plate, and the route is suitable.
Check the vehicle’s restrictions
Rules may distinguish vehicles by category, dimensions, weight, fuel type or emissions class. Before travelling, check the local council’s website and the ZTL order, then look for separate restrictions on heavy vehicles or areas with specific characteristics. Do not assume a motorhome is treated like a car just because the same driving licence is used.
Read the vehicle details in its documents and compare them with the categories named in the order. If the rules do not mention motorhomes or the classification is unclear, ask the local mobility office. A general permit for tourism or a campsite does not necessarily cover every checkpoint or replace the traffic rules along the route.
Book the site and confirm the registration
Contact the campsite, storage site or car park before setting off. Ask whether it is inside the zone, which entrance it recommends, whether it registers number plates and what information it needs. Request confirmation of the process and deadlines. If the vehicle changes, provide the new registration and wait for updated instructions.
Check the checkpoint map and plan a route suitable for the motorhome’s dimensions and any restrictions. Automatic route planners may not account for height limits, narrow roads or local restrictions. Also check where you may stop without obstructing traffic: a booking does not make an improvised stop outside the entrance lawful.
Arrive without improvising
If you have no confirmation that the permit is valid, park outside and contact the site or local council. Do not follow other motorhomes or enter because the sign is unclear. Carry the requested documents, but rely only on the procedure set out by the local authority.
Check the motorhome’s length, height and weight in its documents against the zone’s access limits and the car park’s restrictions. If the campsite says it is accessible, also ask for the authorised route and whether the registration must be submitted. Do not follow sat-nav directions through a prohibited checkpoint just to shorten the journey.

Frequently asked questions
Does a campsite booking authorise me to drive through the zone?
Not automatically. Ask whether the number plate must be registered and whether this covers your route and dates.
Is a sat-nav map enough for a motorhome?
No. Check access restrictions and road conditions with official sources and the site operator as well.
