How to refuel at a self-service petrol station, step by step

Check the fuel, switch off the engine, select the pump and amount, and follow the instructions displayed at the station.

At a self-service station, first check which fuel your car requires, then follow the site instructions: switch off the engine, select the pump and payment method, and use the correct nozzle. If the station uses a different system or you are unsure, ask a member of staff for help.

Before you start

Check the handbook or the label inside the fuel flap to identify the compatible fuel. Do not choose by nozzle colour: it can vary between stations. Select a pump for the correct fuel, check its number and displayed price, and make sure self-service is available.

Park beside the pump without obstructing other customers, switch off the engine and apply the parking brake. Avoid flames, smoking and anything that could create sparks; follow the signs and safety instructions. If you notice a fuel smell, leak or fault, stop and notify the operator.

Select the pump and refuel

Pay or pre-authorise an amount as instructed by the terminal and note the pump number. Open the fuel flap and unscrew the cap without putting it somewhere dirty or unstable. Pick up the nozzle for the correct fuel, insert it fully into the filler and start dispensing.

Follow the station’s on-screen instructions: some allow you to set a maximum amount, while others stop when the amount is reached or the tank is full. Do not force the trigger or try to fill beyond the first automatic shut-off. If the system does not start, use the help button or contact staff.

Finish and set off safely

When dispensing stops, wait a moment for the remaining fuel in the nozzle to drain, then remove it carefully. Return it to its holder, close the cap and fuel flap, and check the receipt or charge. Do not start the engine while the nozzle is connected or out of its holder.

If you spill fuel on the bodywork or floor, do not use rags or improvised tools: notify the operator and follow the site safety procedure. Refuelling with LPG or methane may require specific instructions and equipment; follow the signs and the attendant’s directions. If you are not authorised to use self-service at that type of installation, wait for staff.

Before setting off, you can revise the rules of the road with Quiz Patente Ufficiale: chapters, test quizzes and error review.
