Motorcycle tyre pressures: how and when to check them
Check both tyres when cold and use only the figures specified for your motorcycle, tyres and load.
To check motorcycle tyres, measure the pressure when cold with a gauge and use the manufacturer’s figures for that model, tyre and load. Check the front and rear separately; do not use the pressure for your car or another motorcycle.
Find the right figure
Check the motorcycle handbook or the label on the vehicle. The figure may vary with tyre size and type, a passenger, luggage or a particular use. If you have fitted a tyre different from the original, ask a tyre specialist and the manufacturer which specification applies.
Do not use the maximum figure printed on the sidewall as the operating pressure. That is a tyre limit and is not necessarily the pressure recommended for the motorcycle. Note the front and rear wheel specifications so you do not mix them up while adjusting the valve.
Measure with cold tyres
Before a ride, once the motorcycle has been standing, remove the valve cap and use an accurate gauge. Keep the connector straight to minimise air loss, then read the figure. If adjustment is needed, add or release air in small steps and measure again.
Riding heats the tyres and changes the reading. If you stop at a tyre specialist after riding, do not let air out to bring a hot-tyre reading down to the cold figure. Check again when cold or follow the method in the handbook and the professional’s advice.
Check condition and handling too
As well as pressure, inspect the tread, sidewalls, valves and rims. Cuts, bulges, cracks, recurring pressure loss or vibration need a technical check. Correct pressure cannot repair a damaged casing or worn tyre.
Check regularly and before journeys; do not wait for a warning light. If your motorcycle has a monitoring system, follow its instructions for interpreting warnings and do not rely on the display alone. After adjustment, replace the cap and check for leaks at the valve.

Frequently asked questions
What pressure should I use in my motorcycle tyres?
Use the figures in your motorcycle handbook or on its label, separately for the front and rear and for the expected load. There is no universal figure.
Should I check my tyres after every ride?
Check them regularly and before journeys or intensive use; if you hit a pothole or feel vibration, check as soon as it is safe. Repeated pressure loss needs a professional inspection.
